November Gardening Tips
Lawns
Rake up any leaves that have fallen onto your lawn as often as you can. Your lawn will be happier for you doing this, as it needs all the sun it can get at this time of the year. This will also help in the battle against moss and will also avoid yellowing of your lawn. Compost the leaves if possible. By now you should have re-seeded if necessary and prepared your lawn for winter by spreading a weed’n’feed product. It’s also a good time of the year to lay a new lawn with turf in preparation for next spring. It would be a good idea to cut your lawn on a higher setting also.
Pruning
Finish pruning any summer flowering shrubs that you haven’t had the time to do. Now’s the time to prune your rambling and climbing roses also. Your ivy would also be due for a short back and sides after flowering and prune any tall shrubs to prevent wind damage.
Planting
Plant some wall flowers. winter flowering pansies or forget-me-nots for a brilliant colour display. There’s still time to plant any new shrubs or plants, however get to it quickly as good stock is quickly running out at many local nurseries. November is also a good month for planting roses.
Winter preparation
If you have purchased any delicate plants this year that aren’t suitable to the English Winter climate, be sure to move them in from the cold, or purchase some protective cloth from your local nursery and cover them to protect from frost. Dig over your garden beds before the frosts arrive.
