Only walk on the lawn to water it for approximately the first 3-4wks, or until you can no longer lift any of the turf as the roots have bedded in to the ground. This is very important as any disturbance to the grass will affect its ability to grow and may die as a result.
When you do water the lawn, try to only walk on the seams/joins.
Make sure it gets watered every day if possible (preferably in the evening when it cools down to allow it to soak in overnight). Let it soak but do not waterlog it. A lawn of approximately 30m2 will only need to be watered for around 15minutes at a time.
This will need to be done for most likely 3-4wks, until you can’t lift any of the turf off the earth as the roots would have bedded in.
Pay particular attention to the edges and joins as these are the areas that dry out first.
If a fox, cat or squirrel etc. lifts any of the turf, put it back in place and give it a firm push back down.
If any leaves, sticks or branches land on the lawn, pick them up as this will inhibit sunlight reaching the lawn in those parts.
You will need to fertilise the lawn in Autumn, then the following Spring. There is a product called ‘Evergreen Weed’n’Feed’ of ‘Evergreen Complete’ that you can buy at B&Q. This will help kill off moss and broadleaf weeds and will also make the lawn appear greener. You can spread this by hand, however a spreader from B&Q would be easier due to the size of your lawn. Make sure the lawn is watered by hand or rain within 2-3 days after spreading or you will risk burning your lawn. You could fertilise your old lawn now to help kill off the moss, then re-seed after raking out the old moss. Once applying the product, it generally takes approx 1.5 wks to see the moss and weeds blacken, then die off.
As with any lawn or garden, weeds will pop-up from time-to-time as birds fly over and seeds fly through the air.
The best way to eliminate them is to remove them at first site so they don’t spread.
Only give the new lawn its first cut once the roots have bedded in and you have seen that the lawn has grown.
