May Gardening Tips
Lawns
If you haven’t already, make sure you ‘weed n feed’ your lawn now. This will kill off any broadleaf weeds or moss you have in your lawn. Rake out after 2-3wks or once the weeds/moss have died and re-seed and top-dress if necessary. Available at any good garden centre or diy store, apply this product to your lawn and read the directions carefully. Ensure that the lawn is watered within three days of application
Garden Beds
Remove any dead flower heads from hydrangeas to allow for new shoots to take their place. Remove any dead wood also from your garden beds. Adding mulch to the base of plants will assist in moisture retention and give the plants more nutrients. Applying bark chippings will make your garden look more tidy and also add more colour and contrast to your garden.
Watering
Make sure new plants are watered regularly during dry spells. This is best done in the early evening.
Water any re-seeded lawns regularly also to promote growth.
Weeds
One of the almost never ending tasks in the garden, you can slow down the growth of weeds in several ways. If you have weeds on your pathways or driveway, apply a product called ‘Roundup’, making sure you check the weather forecast that it’s not going to rain. Do not apply anywhere near lawns, plants or shrubs, or on a windy day. If weeds in garden beds are a problem for you, adding bark or slate chips will slow down weed growth and also help to retain moisture for your plants after rain or watering.
Waste Removal
If you are having household or green waste removed by a independent contractor from your property, be sure to check they have a current Environmental Agency certificate, stating that they are registered waste carriers. Removing waste without a waste carriers licence is considered illegal and both parties may face a fine if the rubbish is dumped illegally.
