June Gardening Tips
Lawns
Mow less often if it hasn’t been raining and mow more frequently if your grass is growing out of control. Try not to cut the grass too short by raising the height of your mower blades if necessary. Cutting the lawn too short in summer could scorch your grass during hot spells. Keep weeds in your lawn under control by removing new shoots as soon as you notice them. Raking with a springtime rake prior to mowing will also help.
Roses
Sprinkle rose fertilser around the roots of your roses to encourage stronger growth and a better flower display. If rain doesn’t fall within a couple of weeks, lightly hoe the fertiliser into the soil, making sure you don’t harm the roots.
Pruning
Any spring flowering shrubs can be pruned after flowering to maintain their size and shape. Also continue thinning out any overgrown evergreens.
Water Features
Now is the perfect time to install a water feature. Any large garden centre should have a decent selection. If you have a pond, it’s also a great time to add new fish as the water would have warmed up. Make sure you clean put your pump filter if it is being run frequently.
Watering
Water any newly planted plants daily to ensure survival. Any tree ferns should also be watered daily throughout warm, dry weather.
Waste Removal
If you are having household or green waste removed by a independent contractor from your property, be sure to check they have a current Environmental Agency certificate, stating that they are registered waste carriers. Removing waste without a waste carriers licence is considered illegal and both parties may face a fine if the rubbish is dumped illegally.
