January Gardening Tips
Garden Design planning
It’s not long now until the Spring rush, so start planning any garden modifications now. If you’re looking at having any paving, decking or hard landscaping work completed, why wait until March when most landscapers are busy? If you plan ahead now, you can enjoy your new garden sooner. Planting season begins in Spring, therefore it’s also a good time to start planning what plants you would like to introduce to your garden and where you are thinking of planting them.
Wooden Fencing
If you need a new wooden fence, or an existing wood fence repaired, why wait? You could have it installed or repaired now prior to Spring.
Jet-Washing / Pressure Washing
Keep your patio, driveway or pathway safe by having it jet-washed, eliminating unsightly moss.
Lawns
Keep any lawns free from leaves and dead-wood. By leaving them on your lawn prior and/or through winter, your lawn may be affected by moss and your lawn may also discolour.
Frost
Be prepared for any frost or snow and cover any plants that are sensitive to either, alternatively if they are in pots, bring them inside. This is particularly the case if you have any meditteranean plants that aren’t native to England’s harsh winter climate. Although many garden centres now sell many varieties of plants from warmer climates, they do need to be looked after carefully. If you are going to cover them up, you can buy breathable fabric from any good garden centre.
Compost
It’s now a good time to spread any compost from your compost bins. Start first by spreading it at the base of any plant or shrubs, this will keep some warmth in for the remainder of Winter and add nutrients at the same time.
Lawn Mowers and Power Tools
Now’s the time to get your mower blades sharpened and get any other power tools ready for Spring.
