Febuary Gardening Tips
Tidy-up, cut back and remove any dead-wood from your garden to see what spaces you have available for this seasons planting, and do some research on what will work where.
Arrange for any garden design projects or planting schemes now, in preparation for the Spring rush.
There is still a chance of frost, so be sure to cover any early flowering or tender plants with some type of cloth material at the first sign of freezing. Ask at your local garden centre for the best type to buy. Remove the cloth as soon as the weather improves.
Bulbs
If you missed out on planting bulbs in November, you can pick up some bedding plants from your garden centre or some DIY stores with garden centres at very affordable prices. This will brighten up your garden for the next few months, and help fill in those empty spaces. Be sure to pick-up some compost also for planting, adding vital nutrients to your soil.
Pruning
Prune all summer flowering shrubs now to encourage new growth and a great season’s show. Also prune any trees as necessary, including fruit trees whilst they are still lying dormant.
Fencing
If you’ve had fence panels blown down due to any recent storms, once they’re replaced be sure to paint them with ‘Cuprinol’ or a similar product to protect them from the elements.
Garden tools
Don’t wait until the Spring rush to repair your mower or other gardening tools, get to it now!
