August Gardening Tips

Lawns

Compost any lawn clippings in compost bins. This will save you money for when you need compost in the future. It’s still an excellent time of the year to re-seed your lawn or lay turf (for best and instant results). Weed your lawn as necessary to keep it in tip-top shape.

Pruning

Trim and shape any formal hedges that are overgrown to keep them in shape. They will be easier to maintain if you do this, and won’t annoy your neighbors at the same time. Dead-head any plants or shrubs that have finished flowering.

Roses

Roses that have died off can now be dead-headed. Remove any suckers coming up from the ground near the base of your rose stems.

Climbers

Prune side-shoots on Wisteria to approximately 15cm.

Weeds

Keep hoeing between plants and shrubs in your garden beds to keep weeds to a minimum.

Watering

Ensure your lawn and garden are watered in the early evening if it hasn’t had much rain. Be careful not to water when the sun is shining or you might scorch your lawn or damage plant foliage. Containerised plants should be watered regularly during dry periods.
