April Gardening Tips
Lawns
Now is the time to apply a Spring Weed ‘n’ Feed lawn fertiliser. This will improve the color and appearance of your lawn, and also eliminate any broad-leaf weeds you may have. If there is moss growing in the lawn, use a Spring lawn fertiliser that has the moss-killer included. Rake the moss out with a wire rake once it dies and goes black.
Now is also a great time to re-seed a lawn if necessary. Do this only after you’ve applied a weed ‘n’ feed. Cover it with a thin mesh from a garden centre and peg down to stop any animals trying to take the seed. Spread a thin layer of soil or compost on top of the seed to keep it in place.
Trees & Shrubs
April is the best month to plant and transplant trees, shrubs, grasses and ground covers. Water them well prior to and after planting.
It would be a good idea to spread a high nitrogen fertilizer around the bases of any evergreen plants in your garden. They will love you for it.
Early April is a good time to prune deciduous (non-evergreen) trees and shrubs that bloom on new wood. Prune-hard Buddleias (Butterfly Bushes) to maintain their original size and encourage a larger flower show.
Bulbs
You should deadhead your spring flowering bulbs when they have finished flowering. However don’t cut off the green foliage yet. The green leaves will continue to grow for a few weeks, and provide the bulb with food for flowering next year.
Roses
Plant your new rosebushes before they start to grow and buds swell.
Fruit trees
April is an excellent time to choose and plant fruit trees. Fruits trees grow best when planted in full sun.
